I am not here to grieve Larry’s death, but to thank G-d that such a man lived. Indeed, the timing of his demise, like the ending of a story, gives a changed meaning to what preceded it. And obviously, true wisdom comes to each of us when we realize how little we understand about life, ourselves and the world around us…

Two weeks before Larry turned 61, and about 8 months before he was due to retire after more than 30 years, many as a supervisor, down at the city’s ports, he died the other day. Suddenly. Indeed, unexpectedly… which may … Continue reading

Life is hard. Then you die. Then they throw dirt in your face. Then the worms eat you. Just be grateful it happens in that order. Hmm… Many folks long for immortality when they don’t even know what to do with themselves on a rainy Sunday afternoon. Life is for the living; but the dead always live with us. So let’s talk about Joan and me…

I don’t know why Joan and I never quite clicked. Perhaps because I firmly subscribe there is absolutely nothing that is above humorous reproach. Yet her humorless face always harbored a sangfroid that seemed above reproach. In other words, I … Continue reading

What happens if you get scared half to death – twice? Hmm… Fear is just excitement in need of an attitude adjustment. And only when we are no longer afraid do we begin to live. As Dan once told me: There are very few monsters who warrant the fear we have of them…

Towards the end of the Memorial Day ceremonies at the Vietnam ‘Duty to Remember’ monument in Philadelphia I watched as the charge d’affaires of the local Vietnam Vets Association collapsed — in the more than mild afternoon heat, of a … Continue reading

Why do we kill people who are killing people to show that killing people is wrong? Hmm…certainly, the murder of civilians for political statement did not begin with 911… I have killed – in self defense. The first time my greatest fear was not of being killed, but having to kill someone else. Then I got used to it…

A policeman-friend, who has seen way too many butchered corpses, exhaled a puff of cigar smoke through a mischievous smile as he plaintively lamented that killings in Philadelphia were down this year.  “I hope they pick up,” said the Crime … Continue reading

I tried to commit suicide by sticking my head in the oven, but there was a cake in it. Hmm…There is something both great and terrible about suicide, euthanasia and such. But the law is ‘law-fool’ and afflicts us foolishly. The only difference between suicide and martyrdom is press coverage.

One of the times I tried suicide the rope ended up being too long. Hmm… Don’t laugh. This was a tragic miscalculation. After all, I was a math major. Another time I tried overdosing on what I thought was sleeping … Continue reading

Why the hell would a Jew commit suicide in a world ‘so fraught with vile vultures keen at jumping on every opportunity to gamely excise whatever wasn’t already circumcised?’…If only I could still ask Lee…

No one really knows why Lee Lavinson may have killed himself. We only heard when, where, what and how. Some of the details may be a little sketchy. But what I heard is that he macramé a Windsor knot in … Continue reading

If you think you want to live forever, try spending a night with my ex-wife. Otherwise, listen to my Mother: Without your health, it all gets too humiliating…

The other night on the phone I teased my 91-year-old mother that she was going to live forever… And so far so good, eh? I could practically hear my mother calculating through her rich, long-ago- premature, silver hair. Finally she … Continue reading
