As you get older it’s harder to have heroes, but it is sort of necessary… I guess. But just because I ‘accidentally’ saved the chief’s life, shouldn’t have made me his hero. And then he offered me his daughter. Oy-vey! Heroes don’t get wives, they get all duh women… don’t they? Sooo, what is a hero?

One time, a lot of years back, in West Africa, after a rather raucous conflict that involved shooting people who were spraying bullets and other harmful objects our way, a tribal chief tried to reward me with one of his … Continue reading

At a cocktail party one should drink wisely but not too well, and talk well but not too wisely… Suddenly this gabby, fluffy woman started shrieking and assaulting me. She screeched that I said: ‘Take your clothes off, I listen better…’ Hmm… Could be. Sounds like me.

The way Cherie was vigorously shaking the chrome cocktail container mixing potent icy cosmopolitans you might have thought she made her living as a cabana server instead of a news anchor on local TV. But that was the drink de … Continue reading

Opinions must be able to change. Today’s Post Traumatic Stress was yesterday’s ‘Lack of Moral Fiber.’ Yesterday POW Sgt. Bergdahl became today’s latest victim of the Afghan war. We blame him. We want to punish him. But I want to first shoot so many others who knew what they were doing…

I’ve never quite understood people who seek to be ‘dominated’ sexually. Or submit to other manners of rough sex that doesn’t hold back. Then again I’ve never understood why I’ve always endeavored to risk my life on grand adventures from … Continue reading

Children begin by loving their parents; then they judge them; rarely do they forgive them… There is no cure for the common birthday. And Zakki’s miraculous 21st was anything but common. Which proves the more b-days you have, the longer you live. And the longer you have to forgive your parents…

I have always maintained – even long before my younger son Zakki was born with just about every critical malady to overtax the frontiers of medical science — that the more birthdays you have the longer you live. And miraculously … Continue reading

Will somebody please inform me who is in charge these days? Because I’m ready to follow Joan of Arc. At least women and children seem to accept that uncertainty is part of the taking charge process. Nobody claimed it isn’t hard to lead a cavalry charge — especially if you think you look funny on a horse.

As more than one disillusioned idealist has uttered: If you put the federal government in charge of the Sahara Desert, in 5 years there’d be a shortage of sand. But my trouble is finding out just who is in charge … Continue reading

A question that sometimes drives me hazy: Am I or are the others crazy? No doubt exists that we are all crazy; it’s only a question of degree. However, if you’re going to be crazy, you have to get paid for it or else you’re going to be locked up… And then there was Robin Williams…

I was misdiagnosed. But I don’t really blame the psychiatrist. He was a victim of Stephanie. Just as I was. She didn’t so much convince him I was crazy. Just as she didn’t convince me. We both just surrendered. And … Continue reading

Now hear this! If you go thru any life and death medical trauma you will inevitably suffer a depression like Post Traumatic Stress. Unless you have an ex-wife who screams that you are bloody nuts. And the nutty docs listen…at first.

I’ve always maintained that there is never a time you can’t find the humor in matters – even when you’re perched before a firing squad. I mean, what the hell…what the hell…what the heck…hang yourself up by the neck. You … Continue reading
